Baby tooth extraction
Only when needed, based on the X-ray, and without frightening the child.
Not every baby tooth is removed just because “it will fall out anyway”. The timing of an extraction depends on the child’s age, the condition of the tooth and the development of the permanent tooth seen on the X-ray. Wherever possible, we try to treat the baby tooth and keep it in the mouth.
When removal is needed
- The permanent tooth is ready to come through and the baby tooth is in the way
- The tooth is so broken down that it cannot be saved with treatment
- Infection around the root threatens the developing permanent tooth
- After an injury the tooth is too damaged to be kept
What extraction is like for the child
Children often think we will “pull the tooth out with pliers”. We explain the process step by step, numb the area well and work without rushing. On the same day we also assess whether the resulting gap needs to be kept open.
