Treatment under sedation

Calm treatment supervised by an anaesthetist for anxious children and those who need extensive treatment.

Sedation means using medicine to make the child calm and drowsy. The child is much calmer, and treatment can be done without holding them in the chair by force. The sedation is given by an anaesthetist, who monitors the child’s breathing, pulse and oxygen level throughout the treatment.

Who it is recommended for

  • Children with a strong fear of the dentist who cannot be treated
  • Young children who cannot stay in the chair for long
  • Children who need extensive treatment on several teeth
  • Children with special needs, including various syndromes, after a medical assessment

Not every child needs sedation

Sedation is not an easy option chosen for convenience. If a child agrees to treatment through play, explanation and getting to know us step by step, we work without sedation. When it is indicated, sedation is a medical approach that protects the child’s safety, the quality of treatment and their future attitude to the dentist.

How safety is ensured

  • Before sedation we examine the child, look at the X-rays and prepare the treatment plan
  • We get clearance from the child’s paediatrician, taking into account past illnesses, operations and current medicines
  • If the paediatrician does not give clearance, we do not start the procedure: sometimes the right decision is not to start treatment
  • The sedation is given by an anaesthetist who monitors the child throughout the treatment
  • The child stays under our care until fully awake and stable

What parents should know on the day of sedation

  • The anaesthetist will tell you exactly how long the child must not eat or drink; follow this rule strictly
  • Dress the child comfortably and bring their favourite toy
  • After treatment the child may be sleepy for a few hours, and an adult should stay with them that day
  • Start with fluids and soft foods, and if the mouth is still numb, make sure the child does not bite their lip
Our goal is to protect not only the teeth, but also the child’s future attitude to the dentist.
