Steel crowns

A ready-made cap that protects a badly broken-down baby tooth and later falls out with it.

A steel crown is a ready-made metal cap placed on a badly broken-down baby molar. We often hear the question, “What is that metal thing you put in?” The answer is simple: the crown protects the tooth until the permanent tooth comes through, and then falls out on its own together with the baby tooth.

When it is needed

  • If decay has destroyed several surfaces of the tooth and a filling will not last
  • After root canal treatment
  • On teeth with enamel development defects that break down quickly
  • In children with a very high risk of decay

Why a crown rather than a filling

Research shows that on badly broken-down baby molars, ready-made crowns last longer than ordinary fillings, with a lower chance of pain and repeat treatment. The crown helps the child chew, speak properly and keep the space for the permanent tooth.
